PLN 7 "Machines are Us/ing Us"

Dr. Michael Wesch
Michael Wesch’s “Web 2.0…The Machine is us/ing us” demonstrates how computers are starting to use people once they post images and other comments on the internet.  At first glance this video by Wesch seems to just be talking about how people’s writing is faulty compared to machines typing. He then shows us and goes more into detail about what computers and machines can really do like web applications, HTML formats, and Google. From then on out Wesch show’s us how the machine is learning from us or using us. Every link we click or every website we visit is teaching the machine how to reopen new stuff or keep it saved. Making it seem like we are the machines teacher but as time goes on we rely more and more on the machine more than it relies on us.
Summary Response:
Michael Wesch’s “The Machine is us/ing us” show’s viewers the use of the Web can not only ruin peoples reputations but can also ruin their lives.  Michael Wesch shows people that every time someone posts a picture or video or a status on facebook that the web will always have it causing the machine to be smarter than people and to hold their secrets. He also tries telling people that we’ve become more dependant on using machines today than people ever have in the past warning people that they  need to be careful of what they post or say online. Dr. Wesch goes on by saying “We need to rethink love, family, ourselves.”. What he’s trying to tell people is that they need to think if the internet and web is actually helping them or changing them. The machine is becoming smarter than the user and people rely more on it than they did on one another. People are losing themselves online, on the web, and even in video games. Machines are the peoples new generation and people need to be more careful about what they post or use the internet for or they might lose themselves in it.

The artical “The Case Against High-School Sports” by Amanda Ripley puts a negative effect of high-school sports that affects a student education because students from present time are doing worse in school because of sports. Amanda tells people that high-school sports are more important to students than getting a good education. Schools spend more money on the sports that kids are playing instead of the students education. The average in Shanghai, that's why China is ranked number one around the world. If schools just cut down on sports then students could have a better educations than students in other countries.

“The Case Against High-School Sports” by Amanda Ripley is talking about how high schools need to stop funding so much into sports and put more time and money into education because in the long run education is going to get you everywhere in life while sports won't necessarily do that. With all of the sports that kids are playing and all the time that sport takes up its not giving the kids the time they need to work on homework or study. Some schools will even go as far as to spend as much as they need to keep their sports equipment updated and will cut down on teaching if needed. People also say that sports  help students stay fit and teach them good sportsmanship and how to work well with others, but it is costing them more money than they should be spending. The principal realized that none of the students in sports were going to play after they graduate making all the time that they put into that sport worthless and they could have been doing something better like studying. Spelman College has cut sports and used the money from the cut to help do things like buy better equipment for teaching. They instituted cheaper classes like swimming. If high schools focus on academics, students grades would be much better. Schools could also have cheaper sports like soccer and volleyball. Some schools need to change their main focus from sports to academics.

Footprints in the Digital Age

“Footprints in the Digital Age” by Will Richardson demonstrates how easy it is for people to find you on the internet and how when you do something online you can never erase it. The fact that everything you’ve ever posted on facebook or anything anyone has ever said about you true or not is permanently on  the internet and can never be taken off is frightening. Some people also believe that everything that is said is true so if someone posts something on their web page about something you didn’t actually do it’ll be on there forever and people who don’t even know you will think differently about you.
The reason Richardson is so worried about what goes on the internet is because he has children who go on it all the time and post stuff about their lives. The thing is that they don’t understand that what they’re posting right now can affect them 20 yrs from now. Parents everywhere should be scared about their children going online and playing games or having facebooks. Kids don’t realize that whenever they post something online its up there forever even if they think that they can take it off people will always have a way of getting it. If you really think about that long and hard you realize that that’s scary and not a life anyone would actually want. Everyone messes up and people forget but if you mess up online then it’s stuck with you forever and no one will ever forget because it’ll keep coming back up. There are ways that you can go online and not do anything bad by not making accounts and putting safeties on it but most people don’t use it. Some people think that by doing this their children will be safe but this isn’t necessarily true, kids are a lot smarter than parents give them credit for and they can sometimes find a way to turn off those safeties and that can end up making everything worse for them in the future. The internet can be a fun safe place if you know how to use it some children shouldn’t be aloud to go on it unless if their parents are by their sides.

Bully- Redo

The video “Bully” By Lee Hirsch has become an epidemic because bullying has pushed kids to the point of not only hurting themselves but hurting others too. Bullying isn’t just when people push someone down or beat them up or have their lunch money stolen bullying is also calling people mean names and crushing their spirits or making hurtful rude comments. This documentary of bullying show’s people that there is bullying going on in the world and that it isn’t just a couple of kids in each school but more like the whole school bullying a couple of kids. It also helps people notice that if a person is a nobody that no one in the community will really care or stand up for the person getting bullied over if you're a politician kid or someone well known.
In the documentary “Bully” by Lee Hirsch demonstrates to people that the bullying is real and is happening and that the community or the school administrators won't care or help you unless if the problem becomes “big” enough in the society. Meaning that if someone is getting pushed around or called mean names nothing will happen until it reaches the point of suicide or assault. This leads people to believe that no matter what they do or what people they tell that no one can help them and the problem won’t cease to stop. Most adults try to make kids grow up too fast and deal with their own problems unless if its their own kids. Some school’s and officers do a great job of stopping bullying but mostly kids have to deal with it on themselves. Is it pride, fear, pain? Some tend to believe that it’s because they don’t know how to deal with the problem on their own so when they do go to adults for help and they don’t help they have nowhere else to turn. Soon people start to harm themselves or start hurting others starting a never ending circle of bullying. Lee Hirsch show’s us what is really happening in world and that bullying is really true and that people can stop it if they come together and face the problem. Hirsch show’s people that even though some of the teachers and parents in the community think that they’re making a difference even though they really aren’t. This leads people to think of new ways to stop bullying they can do differently to help stop bullying. People have started clubs and support groups, to try and help bullying but even if they do someone else will always be out there bullying. The truth behind it all is that even though you can have all the people in the world to stand up for you and help you get threw bullying the only person who can really get it to stop is the person getting bullied. Bullying is real and people can stop it all they really have to do is come together and stop taking it in silence.

What Could you DO with $20,000

“What Could you Do with $20,000” by Blake Boles demonstrates what we could do with $20,000 dollars instead of spending it on college. He show’s people that instead of going to college and ending up in debt with the colleges you could have an apartment and you can travel around the world and use that twenty thousand for better things that will give you hands on life experience and that you can also get jobs and make extra cash on the way.
Blake Boles “What Could You Do with $20,000” show’s people that they don’t need college and that they are necessarily better without going to it. Boles gives us examples of his life how he did better without getting into college. He first started off by showing us what he could provide for himself with only 20K. First, he bought an apartment for 6 months and got a laptop. He also got high speed internet and still had a lot of money left over. What Boles then used that for was groceries and fun activities as well as traveling around the world and going to visit his family. Even after all of that he still has money left over and he still didn’t even mention all of the stuff that he can get for free and all the activities he can do! He goes on showing people that even though you haven’t gone to college you can still get a job and make extra money on the side. That’s not all you can also go be a free entern learning about the job you want and to see if its really meant for you. Although not many people agree with what Boles is trying to show us he still has a point. Most colleges are robbing us blind because we're going there to get a job that won't even pay us enough to pay off our college loans. With this Boles demonstrates to people that they don’t need to go to college to get a good job and make bank and that most people who do go to college and get a degree for a good job usually are worse off then not even going to college at all. How? With all of the debt they’re in when they graduate is worth more then the job that they went to college for. Why do people expect us to go to college and get a good job if in the end we won't even be able to use the money we earned.

What’s Wrong with the Teenage Minds” by Alison Gopnik is an article talks about teenagers that are growing up too fast or too slow teenagers. Some examples that Gopnik lists is that teenagers grow up faster than they use too by hitting puberty sooner then they used to and that sometimes they overestimate their rewards. Gopnik has done some research and wrote in the article that the reason why teens are hitting puberty earlier than they did in the past is because they  aren’t being as active. Gopnik also said most kids don’t have chores or very little chores causing them to not have as much discipline. Gopnik has also seen that teens who said they wouldn’t drink and drive they end up in a drinking and driving accident. Teens are also applying for jobs at the age of 14-16 but they get turned down because they are still young or have no experience at all. Some teenagers are even starting to get internships at the age of seven. Kids overestimate their reward from trying to grow up, having too much confidence and learning from their mistakes. Kids are also making bad choices in life such as smoking, drinking, and not doing their homework. The kids underestimate that this is a huge risk of their future such as not being able to go to college, not planning time very well, and having a job they don’t want. These are just some of the things Gopnik has listed in her article “What Wrong with the Teenage Minds.”

Reading “What’s Wrong with the Teenage Minds” by Alison Gopnik really shocked me and caught me off guard. What Gopnik wrote in her article is true most teenagers that end up smoking or drinking below age don’t end up with the future or jobs that they had wanted. The reason most teenager will disagree with this is because they don’t talk about the successful teenager the one who have finished college and has gotten a successful job. Yes, they probably went to their adulthood late or came out with some bad grades but they also ended up graduating out of college and getting good jobs. Kids who are underestimating the risks of drinking or not doing homework are the ones that usually have a job that they probably hate. They probably can’t leave their parent’s house and haven’t been to college yet. For the conclusion of this Gopnik is trying to say teens are just growing up too fast so they can get respect from their parents. Were trying to say that we don’t get any freedom from our parents. Teens aren’t growing up how they used to because we don’t live in the same generation as our parents did. Now we have technology and more responsibilities and even more stress added on because we don't just get first degree from our parents we also get it from teachers. She doesn’t understand that most teenagers go into drinking and smoking because they’ve been taught that it takes off the stress of all the work they have to do and all of the stress they get from their parents.

"A Vision of Students Today" by Dr. Michael Wesch demonstrates the idea of technology changing how kids learn today and how that it affects their learning. He first starts off by going into how kids aren't usually paying attention during class instead they're either on Facebook or some other source of entertainment. After that he keeps going on about how students don't even show up to class anymore instead they just get all the information off the teachers websites and emails the homework in. But Michael also goes on about how it makes life easier that teachers don't have to keep moving around while teaching and that it cuts kids time in half since they can work on their homework online anytime anywhere. He keeps going on about how with technology you don’t even need textbooks anymore all you have to do is have a laptop or a tablet with you.
Dr. Wesch’s video “A Vision of Students Today” is clearly portraying to us that all of technology is better for our schooling. Now when you’re working over time at your job or have to go on a business trip you can never miss a day of schooling and can work from home. It makes it easier for kids to carry everything around because instead of having to lug around a backpack with 10 textbooks each day all they have to do is bring their computers or tablets around with them. This generation working with technology for school is making the country into a better nation because it is giving students more time to work wherever and whenever they want and to get stuff done and turn it in on time. Technology is making children today more proficient in time management and easier to keep up with school. This also shows us that without technology students all over the world would be unorganized and messy which would mean that they’re losing most of their assignments and that affects their grades. With all of it put into one place kids won't be losing all of their stuff all the time so they won't be doing so badly in the class. With technology all the notes are also on the web so they can always figure the problems out. That is how Dr. Wesch’s video “A Vision of Students Today” is showing students that technology is helpful to students and schools everywhere.

Reading/Writing August 21 2013

The word reading means to me is that we're doing a project because I don't usually read in my free-time. I think that we read for our entertainment or to prepare us for a future because no matter what job you chose to do or take it always involves reading in some part of it. Usually when I read I start to space off and over think stuff that's going on in my life at the time and then when I snap out of it I'm two chapters from where I last was and have to go back a read it again. When I get confused with a piece of writing I usually just skip over it and continue reading and don't really think about it. The hardest part of reading for me is usually trying to figure out what the words mean that I don't understand and I don't usually ask because that's embarrassing. I know that I am successful when I finish a book and remember almost everything about it because I actually read it and understood it. My role as a leader I think is to try and understand what the author is trying to tell us and try and see how is literature apply's to our life style.

The word writing means to me is that we're doing something creative and fun, it means fun and interesting and that anything we like can happen. We write so that other people can see our idea's and because everyone in the future will always have to write. Weather it's just for fun or for work or even for a project we always will have to write. When I write I usually zone out everything else around me and just focus on my writing and trying to make it good and interesting to read. When I get confused with a piece of writing I usually don't bug about it and just leave it alone. When it comes to writing it is hard for me to make it pop or interesting for other people to read. I know that I am successful with my writing when I am satisfied with my work and am happy with what I had wrote. My role as a writer is to try and make everything exciting and interesting to read and not have anything bland or boring. (even though that's how it normally turns out.)

The word thinking means imagination whenever I hear the word thinking it just reminds me of all our creative ideas and all of the stuff we can accomplish  just with our thoughts. We think to create scenario's  in our mind of what we think will happen or so that we can make our dreams a reality. Mainly when I think I over think everything and it usually keeps me awake at night because I'll start thinking of the worse case scenario's and keep having it go over and over in my mind. When I cant figure something out I usually will just ask someone for help with it unless I feel embarrassed about it then I'll just let it go without thinking about it. When it comes to thinking its hard for me to stay focused on one topic at a time, I'll be thinking about something and then it'll remind me of something else and I'll start thinking about that and so on. I know that I am successful when people are congratulating me on stuff. My role as a thinker is to explore and find out more about the world that other people haven't noticed and bring it to the light so I can share it with everyone.
